Experience and Insight
There is a hidden tradeoff at the heart of qualitative research: friction vs. depth.
Traditional expert networks treat the interview process like a transaction. The client asks questions. The expert answers them. In this model, interviewee experience is secondary. It doesn’t matter whether scheduling is clunky, screening questions are inconvenient, or the interview itself is unpleasant. All is forgiven as long as clients get answers to their questions and experts (eventually) get paid.
But the reality is that the logistical hurdles, social pressure, and rigidity of the traditional process impacts the quality of research. When an interviewee is stressed, rushed, or performing, you don't get their best thinking.
A clean, transparent process makes for a good interview.
The Problem With Traditional Interviews
Expert networks are the standard in qualitative research, but they are by no means a gold standard.
The road to insight is paved with poor logistics — back-and-forth scheduling, lengthy screening questionnaires, last minute no shows. Even when interviews do occur, experts often remain suspicious about payment terms. Too many interviewees have been burned by withheld honorariums or weeks-long delays in compensation. If the process of agreeing to an interview is uncomfortable, how can you expect the interview itself to flow smoothly?
And that’s not to mention the shortcomings of the interviewers themselves. Picture this: you’re a twenty year veteran who knows everything there is to know about your industry. On the other end of the line is a 24-year-old analyst, reading a script, missing nuance, and rushing you through their pre-written questions so they can prorate the conversation. Having been that analyst, I can add that they’re probably too busy taking verbatim notes to really pay attention.
This is an uncomfortable formula, and it affects the quality of research. It’s hard to predict how a person might respond to an awkward situation. Experts might enter performance mode, becoming so focused on the not-so-subtle biases of the interviewer that they themselves end up being less objective than usual. They may feel pressure to fill awkward silences, sacrificing accuracy for speed as a result. And it’s undeniable speaking to a stranger can inhibit honesty, especially regarding sensitive topics or contrarian views.
Besides, even the best researchers have bad days. It’s human. Unfortunately, it also leads to worse results. Variations in tone, leading questions, or uneven follow-ups can skew results in subtle ways. Changing the interviewer means changing the data, making it difficult to systematize research.
The experience is bad for subjects (who aren't paid fast enough), researchers (who waste time coordinating logistics), and investors (who receive data riddled with subtle bias).
What Are AI Interviews?
When people talk about AI expert network interviews, they’re not talking about replacing human judgment. They’re talking about standardizing and improving the research process so that human judgment can be better applied. Think of AI interviews like standardized, structured but adaptive conversations. It’s the rigor of a survey with the organic ease of casual chat.
Common formats include:
Async text interviews: Chat-based interfaces that feel like messaging a colleague.
Voice interviews: Spoken conversation without the visual pressure of video.
Guided video prompts: Recording answers to specific questions on the participant's own time.
But the best part about AI interviews is that they unlock a far smoother experience for research participants. And that means better research.
The Seamless Experience
When you switch to AI interviews, the expert network model no longer makes sense. AI agents can conduct an interview whenever it’s convenient to the participant — gone are the days of scheduling, back-and-forths, and cancellations. Payment is easy and quick as well. Once an interview is completed, the AI interviewer can trigger rewards via API, meaning compensation is processed daily.
The interviews themselves are smoother too. Comfort increases candor. Without the social pressure to impress a human interviewer, participants drop the "corporate mask" and are more likely to admit what they don’t know and share unpopular opinions. Consistency also enables comparison. And AIs don’t get tired. Investor teams can run as many interviews as they’d like.
A great experience means more experts agreeing to participate in your research. It means experts feeling confident enough to share more.
Conclusion: Seamlessness Is a Strategy
A seamless interviewee experience is not a nice-to-have — it is a strategic advantage.
Removing the friction of scheduling, payment, and social anxiety clears the path for the truth. If you rely on high-quality insights to make investment decisions, it is time to stop wrestling with calendars and start focusing on the data.
